Going Quackers

This weekend our friends from Perth, Paul and Sue, came to visit us along with their young son, Connor. Of course you may have gathered from previous posts that there are a number of down-sides to having small children visit; in no particular order:

• Small child walking into your bedroom at 5.30am to see if ‘Uncle Dominic’ is awake.
• The ability to projectile spray half-digested food and other nasty substances across all the least forgiving fixtures and fittings.
• Little fingers setting the TV/radio etc to the highest possible volume – with ear-splitting consequences.
• Extreme sleep deprivation.
• Unspecified sticky stuff everywhere.

On the flip side, there are a number of distinct advantages:

• No great expectations of massive cultural tours. Easy to please!
• Lounging around the pool or the beach is acceptable behaviour rather than a waste of an afternoon.
• Great service from waiters/taxi drivers etc. who all want to pinch the cheeky cherub’s little cheeks.

But without doubt, the biggest benefit of having kids here is that it’s a license for us to engage in childish behaviour and things which we wouldn’t normally do for any money. Like the Duck Tour. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a duck….er, well actually it’s a sort of amphibious all-terrain vehicle which moves effortlessly from land into water. Very touristy, but a great way to catch some of the sights and at an hour long, it’s the perfect length to capture the attention span of a toddler before afternoon nap time.
