We’re both working harder than ever at the moment so with a public holiday thanks to Diwali we decided to book a weekend trip to Bintan. This Indonesian island is a mere hour away from Singapore by ferry, making it an ideal short break haven for Singaporeans…and for Germans too, if the lack of sun loungers and beach towels at our hotel was anything to go by!
The resorts in Bintan are ring-fenced into the north-western fringe of the island, and the scale and speed of future developments shows that tourism is really booming here. If you want to break out of tourist-ville, there are various tours you can do – the traditional fishing village, a trip to the markets and so on, although frankly our purpose was 100% rest and relaxation.
If doing as little as possible and getting pampered floats your boat then I highly recommend a trip to Bintan. A word of warning though – if your bill comes in at a cool 15 million, don’t be too concerned. That’s just the conversion from Singapore dollars to Indonesian Rupiah, a currency which rivals Vietnam in the “how many zeros?!!” stakes.
