Heineken VIP Party

Shirin and Alan won a Heineken competition with a fabulous prize: a VIP night out for 20 guests at the Heineken Green Room at Orchard Link. We had the luxury of a ride downtown in a cosmosine (a kind of pimped up mini bus with more than a passing resemblance to one of those gaudy Indian funeral cars). Our two cosmosines were fully kitted out with karaoke systems, a fridge full of Heineken (what else!) and even a pole. Well, there's nothing like doing a spot of pole dancing on the move...

As we cruised down Orchard Road and pulled up at the club, we certainly felt like VIPs. When the cosmosine doors slid open, the Heineken paparazzi zoomed in for those all-important shots of everyone guzzling from Heineken bottles. Our very own party organizer parted the watching crowds, whisking us through the VIP queue and straight into our own private lounge at the back of the club.

Now maybe I'm just getting old, but I quickly found myself lamenting the death of clubbing as I once knew it. Instead of music you could happily dance along to - you know, stuff with actual words, singing, or at least a catchy tune - we were subjected to three hours of something Dom identified as 'Dubstep'. According to Wikipedia "its overall sound has been described as tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines, reverberant drums, clipped samples and occasional vocals." Personally, my definition would be "ponderous thumping bass accompanied by a torturous drone, like wasps being crushed in a blender. Music to slit your wrists to."

Then again, maybe my opinion was coloured by the lack of Heineken consumed on my part, coupled with a dead leg (my latest exciting pregnancy symptom). One thing's for sure - everyone else had a whale of a time. And as if consuming their own body weight in Heineken wasn't enough, I heard that a bunch of people took a cosmosine to Chijmes at 2am so they could carry on partying!
